Air exchanger cleaning

Make sure your air exchanger is delivering clean air—not dust or contaminants.
Air Exchanger (VRC) Cleaning

Your air exchanger Is it making noise and seems less effective than before? Are there odors coming out of your vents even when they're supposed to be blowing fresh air?

It's probably because your HRV (heat recovery ventilator) or ERV (energy recovery ventilator) needs a good professional cleaning.

Why clean your air exchanger regularly?

Impact on indoor air quality

A clogged exchanger constantly stirs up the same dust and contaminants. Instead of making your air better, it makes it worse.

The accumulation of dirt in the exchange core drastically reduces its ability to filter incoming air. You end up with more pollen, dust and fine particles inside.

Compromised energy efficiency

A dirty exchanger has to work harder to circulate air. This can increase your electricity consumption by 25-40% easily.

Visit heat exchange core clogged, no longer transfers heat efficiently. In winter, you lose heat. In summer, you waste coolness.

Premature wear of components

Fans that push against the resistance caused by fouling wear out faster. A motor that should last 15 years may fail after 8-10 years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Exchanger Cleaning

How can I tell if my air handler really needs to be cleaned, and not just a filter change?

Honestly, when a customer asks me this question, the issue has often already gone beyond just a filter. A dirty filter reduces the flow rate a little. A dirty heat exchanger, on the other hand, completely changes the system’s performance.
If your HVAC system is noisier than before, if certain rooms aren’t getting proper ventilation, or if odors keep coming back even with new filters, we’ve seen this happen dozens of times: the coil is clogged. The filter provides protection, but it doesn’t prevent all fine dust, grease, or moisture from getting in over time.

Does it happen often that people wait too long to clean their heat exchangers?

Yes, far too often. The classic scenario: ‘It was still working, so we waited.’
When you open up the unit, the fan is almost completely clogged, the fans are working overtime, and at that point, it’s no longer just a matter of cleaning: we’re talking about worn-out motors, dry bearings, and sometimes even corrosion.
Cleaning at the right time is inexpensive. Waiting too long often leads to repairs or replacements.

Is it true that a dirty air exchanger can increase my electricity bill?

At 100 %. We measured it in the field.
A clogged air handler requires more power to move the same volume of air. The motors run longer and at higher speeds. For some customers, we’ve seen a clear reduction in energy consumption after cleaning, especially in the winter when the system runs nonstop.
It's not magic—it's just the mechanics working properly.

Why do bad odors sometimes come out of the air vents?

That's a big red flag.
Odors rarely come from the ducts themselves. Most of the time, they come from the core or damp internal sections where bacteria or mold have taken hold.
We've seen heat exchangers where moisture has been trapped for years. As long as they aren't properly disassembled, cleaned, and disinfected, the odor will always come back, no matter what kind of filters you use.

Can I safely clean my heat exchanger myself?

I'll be honest: you can do basic maintenance, but not a thorough cleaning.
Change or wash the filters—yes. Give the area around them a quick vacuum—correct.
But removing the core, using the right products for the material, cleaning the fans without throwing the blades out of balance… that’s where mistakes happen. We’ve seen paper cores ruined by water and motors damaged by products that were too harsh.
Poor cleaning costs more than a good professional service.

How long does a thorough cleaning done the right way take?

For residential units, a thorough cleaning usually takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the model and condition.
When someone tells you they can clean a heat exchanger in 30 minutes, that's not a proper cleaning—it's just a quick wipe-down.
When we're done, we take the system apart, clean it, dry it, put it back together, and test it. You can immediately tell the difference in flow and noise.

Are all heat exchangers cleaned the same way?

Not at all.
A residential Broan or Venmar unit isn't treated the same way as a high-performance Zehnder or a commercial Carrier VRE. The materials, cores, and tolerances are different.
This is a common mistake: applying the same method to everything. A good technician tailors the cleaning process to the specific model; otherwise, you’ll shorten the device’s lifespan instead of extending it.

How often do you actually recommend having your home cleaned in Quebec?

In real life, not in textbooks:

  • Standard home: every 2–3 years
  • With pets, smokers, or near a construction site: at 12–18 months
  • After renovations: immediately

Quebec's climate is tough on radiators. Between the freezing temperatures, salt, pollen, and humidity, they get clogged up faster here than anywhere else.

What mistakes do you see most often among homeowners?

The worst mistake: waiting for it to break.
The second one: thinking that changing the filter solves everything.
The third option: have only the ducts cleaned without touching the heat exchanger. We see this a lot. The result: the system quickly becomes contaminated again, and the customer thinks, ‘Nothing has changed.’.

Can cleaning really extend the life of the heat exchanger?

Absolutely. We have customers with units that are over 15 years old and still work very well because they've been maintained.
Conversely, we have seen heat exchangers that were 7–8 years old fail because they had never been cleaned.
Regular cleaning makes the difference between having to replace something after 10 years or after 20 years.

Is it worth it financially, or is it just a matter of convenience?

Both.
Between energy savings, avoided repairs, and improved comfort, cleaning often pays for itself.
But most importantly, it prevents emergency breakdowns in the middle of January. And we all know that those are expensive… and that they always happen at the worst possible time.

How should I feel after a good cleanse?

That's a good question, because that's how you know if the job was done right.
You should notice:

  • Less noise
  • A more consistent airflow
  • Fewer odors
  • A more comfortable home, especially in the winter

If nothing changes, it means there's an unresolved issue, and a true professional will come back to check on it—not just disappear.
